The Urgency of Self-Care
This society that we live in makes so many demands. There is such a fast pace in the city; people running around, feeling frustrated and impatient. There is also a lot of fear; "what if I don't get this or that done"..."what will happen to me?"
This is not our true nature. Human beings were not designed to feel constantly threatened by the demands of everyday existence. The most fundamental lifestyle aspects of health; sleeping and eating, have somehow taken a backseat to everything else. Chronic stress also compromises our ability to have a deep, restful sleep, to maintain a healthy appetite and to cope with daily challenges with skill and grace.
What does that say about the importance that we place upon our own self? Everybody knows that they need to take better care of themselves, but few make it happen. Are we waiting for a better time when everything goes smoothly? That's not going to happen. There will always be problems, obligations, and responsiblities. There is no better time to make it happen than RIGHT NOW.
It certainly takes some creativity and requires that one way or another, the current routine needs to change. Change is inevitable, and it is also a sign of growth. What can I do to take better care of myself? What can I do differently? Go to bed an hour earlier? Take a bath? Make a home-cooked meal? Spend some time on a long-forgotten hobby? Incorporate a daily meditation routine? Have some physical exercise? These are not extraordinary things but they can really enhance your quality of life. Given our current realities, it necessitates that we give that much more attention to our own personal needs, and learn more effective ways to manage our stress. In my practice, stress management is a significant aspect of my work with clients since it has such a profound impact on health.
How long can we put it off? Do yourself a favour and start with one small change. Do it today....and most importantly, be happy.
